Why Julie Delpy is my Spirit Animal

With the US release on March 11 of Lolo, Julie Deply's new film, our English editor has a realization every simultaneously talented and anxious female should have at some point in their lives.

Julie Delpy's Lolo, features a sociopathic and coddled son (Vincent Lacoste) and his dynamic but slightly disheveled mother (Julie Delpy) who would give anything to find love. The film made its American debut in New York at the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema festival last week and was a complete gem, thanks to unique perspective, twisted humor and a nail-biting sense of storytelling.

First on the list of how Delpy "just gets me" is her usually sexually graphic sense of humor. You know that you're bound to offend someone with your usual clitoral themed antics and reenactments. But Julie is not that someone. And like her character in Lolo, you most likely have that best gal pal that fires a p%ni$ joke right back with no hesitation.

Something that probably keeps you awake at 3am on a friday night could very well be that fella you met at that bar down the street after one too many gin and tonics, but it most likely will be that good old fashioned hypochondria a la Woody Allen. There is no time for sleep, there is only WebMD for the next four hours. You're 110% sure that you've contracted chlamydia, herpes AND HIV and maybe even the measles from that peck on the cheek from three months ago. Pretty sure that was not cilantro on his lip, and you really are itching all over.

Being flawed is hilarious, but it is also beautiful and relatable. Marilyn Monroe's coquettish smiles and poses are appealing, but her dark depression is much more fascinating. Audrey Hepburn is just boring. The ladies of today appreciate a story with a heroine who is as marvelously confident as she is disastrously insecure. As Violette, Fashion Creative Director from Paris, Delpy is a smart boss lady who broke a few teeth and scraped a few elbows along the path to get to where she is. She also raised a child who is essentially from Children of the Corn, but she is still plugging away. Sometimes she's up and sometimes she's down. As she takes two steps forward and one step back, she embodies what life is for those who truly embrace self acceptance and personal reality.

And let's not forget that her look is, in true artistic and intellectual French fashion, refreshing and au naturel. I'm sorry, but she does not have the time to follow all of the latest makeup tutorials on Instragram. She is writing, acting and directing in feature films for Christ's sake. Just throw on those black horn rimmed glasses, that comfy yet flattering pencil skirt and get out there!

Now go forth and ignite that spirit animal in you, the Julie Delpy way.
