Ridley Scott to direct a Napoleon biopic
And the actor who will play the French Emperor is...Joaquin Phoenix!
Johnny Cash... and now Napoleon Bonaparte. Joaquin Phoenix will be the star once again of a Hollywood biopic, entitled Kitbag. The movie will be directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator, The Martian, Alien) and will be written by David Scarpa, who has previously worked with Ridley Scott on All the Money in the World.
According to Deadline, the film will be a personal look at "Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine". The film will undoubtly capture Napoleon’s most famous battles, his ambition and visionnary strategic mind.
Joaquin Phoenix is far from the first actor to become the French emperor on screen. French actors like Daniel Auteuil (Napoléon et moi), Alain Chabat (Night at the Museum), Patrice Chéreau (Adieu Bonaparte), Christian Clavier (Napoléon), Sacha Guitry (Napoléon) but also American actors like Dennis Hopper (The Story of Mankind) and Rod Steiger (Waterloo) have previously worn Napoleon's bicorne on TV or at the cinema.
