Portrait of a Lady on Fire, following in the footsteps of Amélie?

With an estimated weekend gross of $67,105, Céline Sciamma’s Potrait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu) garnered the third best per-screen average debut for a French film ($33,552) in the last 20 years, finding itself only behind two of Audrey Tautou’s iconic successes: Amélie and Coco Chanel.

The feature starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel is now playing at the Angelika in New York and the Arclight Hollywood in Los Angeles, before a nationwide release on Valentine's day.

The drama, distributed by Neon Rated, is currently the second best-reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes (Palme d’or winner Parasite is first) and was listed in IndieWire’s best films of 2019.

The film was also honored on Sunday night at the LA Critics Awards, winning best cinematography (awarded to Claire Mathon, who was also recognized for her work on Atlantics), and being the runner-up in the best foreign film category, behind Pedro Almodovar’ Pain and Glory. The film has also just been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best foreign film.
