5 Good Reasons to See Breathe in Theaters

If you liked Blue is the Warmest Color, Girlhood, 17 Girls, and... Gone Girl, you will love this new take on adolescence.

1- For its mix of drama and thriller, its gradual tension and its unforeseen finale.

2 - For its clever adaptation of Anne-Sophie Brasme’s book. Just like the novel, the movie progresses as if in disguise, revealing just enough, scene after scene, to make you question the motives and the action of each character.

3 - For its questionning of human relationships. Mélanie Laurent never judges her characters, nor does she give them an excuse for their behaviour. In Breathe, she merely contemplates the difficulty of friendship for a 17-year-old girl with an unstable family environment.

4 - For its two main actresses, Joséphine Japy and Lou de Laâge, who are fragile, sensitive and cruel at times. Both actresses were nominated for a César in 2015.

5 - For Mélanie Laurent’s subtle directing in her second feature. Like a documentary, the camera never leaves the perspective of Charlie, the main character. An approach that leaves the viewer hoping for the best for her and feeling her darkest and loneliest moment.
