25 years of French Touch at Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in New York
Since the mid-1990s, a group of French DJs and producers have revolutionized dance music with their distinct mix of disco samples and robotic vocals. Known as the French Touch, musicians associated with this movement—including Daft Punk, Kavinsky, and Air—have also put their mark on contemporary cinema. The Film Society of Lincoln Center and UniFrance announced that French Touch composer Nicolas Jaar (Dheepan) will join fellow French Touch composers Mathieu Lamboley (for Julie Delpy's Lolo), Morgan Kibby (Bang Gang) Grégoire Hetzel (Summertime) to celebrate 25 years of French Touch at the French film festival Rendez-Vous with French Cinema (the line-up here), with the support of Sacem. The celebration will include a Film Society Talk between American composer Mark Snow and the four French composers, each of whom has scored the soundtrack to a film in the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema series.
Additional events include performances at the private opening party of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema (March 3) by DJ and former Daft Punk manager Pedro Winter (Busy P), where he will be joined by DJs Boston Bun, Jacques and Superpoze in collaboration with French Waves and with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Institut Français and the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF), and a French Waves DJ night open to the public at Le Bain on March 4.
Composers Mathieu Lamboley and Grégoire Hetzel will also participate in Q&A sessions after the screenings of their films Lolo and Summertime and will hold a master class at Steinhardt/NYU (only open to Steinhart Students), moderated by Professor Mark Suozzo.
Also as part of the celebration of French Touch, FIAF will present EDM Anthems: French Touch on Film, a new CinéSalon series of films scored by and about DJs, exploring how French Touch has extended beyond the dance floors to transform the look and feel of cinema itself. Each screening will feature an episode of French Waves, the web series about French Touch music and its artists. EDM Anthems: French Touch on Film kicks off on Tuesday, March 1 with the New York theatrical premiere of the 2015 documentary Daft Punk Unchained, the story of the masked French duo that would indelibly change dance music. Both screenings are free with RSVP, and the 7:30pm screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Hervé Martin-Delpierre and DJ Superpoze.
Additionally, as part of EDM Anthems: French Touch on Film, FIAF will present a French Touch Master Class with DJ Pedro Winter on Thursday, March 3.
