Disney bets on a remake of a 1985 French comedy!

From André Dussollier to Tom Selleck to Zac Efron!

Disney has announced that they’re working on a new remake of Trois hommes et un couffin (Three Men and a Cradle), one of the most popular French comedies of the 80's, directed by Coline Serreau. The story follows three young roommates living the bachelor life, who, through a few plot twists involving gangsters and an ex-girlfriend, have to deal with the responsibility of fatherhood as they’re left to raise a newborn.

If the script sounds familiar to you, it might be because Hollywood has already worked its magic with a remake of the movie in 1987 with Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson taking on the roles of Roland Giraud, Michel Boujenah and André Dussollier. Much better than most US re-creations of French comedies (Let’s pretend The Dinner Game and Little Indian, Big City never happened…), Three Men and a Baby was a huge success upon its release in 1987 surpassing Fatal Attraction to become the biggest American box office hit of that year and even the first live-action Disney film to cross the $100 million mark domestically, which could explain why Disney is yet again betting on this French story.

Zac Efron takes on André Dussolier's role

The remake, which will feature Zac Efron in one of the three title roles, will not hit theatres and will be released straight onto the streaming platform Disney+. Screenwriter Will Reichel is not a stranger to recreating French cinema; he's already worked as a production assistant on the 2004 remake of Taxi, with Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah, which wasn't the success everyone hoped it to be despite decent results at the box-office.

A director has not yet been announced for the film. If Disney is listening, we suggest they hire Oliver Nakache and Éric Toledano, directors of Intouchables, who’ve been flirting with Hollywood for quite a while, or the talented and dry-humor specialist, Julie Delpy.
