Can I watch French films on Netflix?

Yes, there are about a hundred French movies on Netflix, ready to stream for free with English subtitles if you are a subscriber. You can find the full list of French films on Netflix here, which offers a mix of original content and recent French movies.

Despite a library of tens of thousands of films, Netflix has never been big on foreign films, including ones in the French language. Netflix also makes it really hard to find them and mostly promotes its original content in French, which has so far been a little disappointing.

To find some of them, you can go to Movies > Genres > International and then you might have a section around French-language films. If not, then just type French film in the search bar. But that still won't give you the full list! So once you've found a French film you like, you can click on More like this to find other French films in the same genre... which means, you're going to need an hour in front of you...

Have no fear! The easiest way to find all the French films on Netflix at any given time is to check FrenchFlicks' list, updated weekly. You can currently find award-winning dramas like Blue is the Warmest Color (La vie d'Adèle) and The Workshop (L'atelier), thrillers like Carbon and The World Is Yours (Le monde est à nous) or comedies like Nothing to Hide (Le Jeu) and Blind Date (Un peu, beaucoup, aveuglément). FrenchFlicks also regularly reviews newly released French films on Netflix.

You can also find here a guide to every French TV show and stand-up on Netflix (we personally recommand that you watch Call My agent (Dix pour cent) and The Bonfire of Destiny (Le bazar de la charité). We also provide a list of the top 10 best French films on Netflix right now.

Netflix promises more original French content

In January 2020, Netflix celebrated the opening of its Paris office in the heart of the 9th arrondissement. This new office reflects Netflix’s long-term commitment to France's creative community, resulting in over 20 French productiions being developed in 2020.

Netflix has, since launching in France in 2014, developed 24 French titles, including 6 films, 9 series, 5 stand-up shows, 3 documentaries and 1 unscripted series, all available around the world.

The most eagerly awaited one being Arsène Lupin, starring Omar Sy, a new TV show based on the gentleman burglar which promises a mix of suspense, action and comedy.

And if Netflix isn't enough (and it's not for us), well you can find here French films to stream for free (and legally), that includes The Intouchables, The Artist, Mr. & Mme Adelman, My King (Mon roi), Little White Lies (Les petits mouchoirs) and Mesrine: Killer Instinct (L'instinct de mort).
