99¢ Documentary Collection: Balkan Melodie

This week, we are proud to introduce to you another passionate tribute to the love of music, Balkan Melodie, a documentary that follows the legendary ethnomusicologist and music producer Marcel Cellier and his wife, telling the inspiring story of how they brought music from Eastern Europe to the West during the Cold War.

Balkan Melodie

During the cold war, Marcel and Catherine Cellier traveled to the East Europe from Switzerland, documented and collected the music there and brought them back to the west where these melodies were still unknown. With a lifelong passion, they shared the music of Eastern Europe with people internationally through numerous radio programs and records, paving the way to success for musicians like the Romanian pan-flute virtuoso Gheorghe Zamfir and the legendary Bulgarian female vocal choir “Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares.” In this documentary, director Stefan Schwietert follows the footsteps of Marcel and Catherine Cellier, revisits the protagonists in the original adventure that took place 30 years ago, and makes their music shine again.

A moving tribute to people’s passion for music, as well as the immortality of it that keeps shaping the world even in the hardest time.
