Which French movie should I watch on Netflix?
So how to choose between all those French-language films on Netflix? Especially as films come and go. Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, La Haine, La vie d'Adèle and The Artist used to be on the platform but have since been removed. Luckily some great French movies are still there, starting with Shéhérazade, Oxygen with Mélanie Laurent and Athena by Romain Gavras.
French comedies on Netflix
If you're looking for a French comedy, you can of course tune on The Takedown, one of Netflix' biggest success in French. Think of it as a French version of buddy comedies like Bad Boys, 22 Jump Street or Miami Vice, with Omar Sy - star of The Intouchables - and Laurent Laffite in the title roles.
If you have already seen The Takedown and are looking for family-friendly comedies on Netflix, then here is our selection:
- Stuck Together (8 rue de l'humanité) is a comedy by Dany Boon (director of Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis, France biggest box-office hit ever) set during the Covid epidemic and the first lockdown. It's obviously very relatable and boasts an impressive cast.
- Back to School is a French gem about two best friends trying to appear as successful as can be in front of their old bullies and teenage crushes at their middle school reunion. A comedy full of nostalgia but also just laugh out loud funny.
- Bad seeds (Les mauvaises herbes) is what you need to watch if you're looking for a French uplifing comedy. And hey, it's not everyday you see Catherine Deneuve and André Dussolier in a comedy!
Learn French with Netflix
Learning French isn't easy, we'll give you that (but it's a great idea!). So to help you, we selected the best French movies with English subtitles to stream if you're looking to parler français a bit better:
- I am not an easy man (Je ne suis pas un homme facile) is a very Parisian comedy - no accent guarenteed! - about a an upside down world where women are dominating society.
- Gold Brick (Cash), an action comedy set in the perfume world, relies heavily on voice over which can help with the overall comprehension of the movie. Things move fast but the dialogues are never rushing.
- The Misadventures of Hedi and Cokeman (En passant pécho) is the perfect film if you already speak French well but are looking to learn French slang with films. This off-the-wall comedy can even be of help to any French person who's not up-to date with the latest slang!
French Documentaries
Who doesn't love a good true crime or an uplifting sport docu-series? En français s'il vous plaît!
- Anelka Misunderstood looks back at the controversial figure of French football Nicolas Anelka. An intimate portrait of a very public figure.
- Lords of Scam is fascinating and scary as you realize how easy it was for two conmen to fool everyone for years, even the French authorities and governement. A must-see if you liked Spielberg's of Catch Me If You Can!
- Room 2806 The Accusation, this well-made docuseries follows the 2011 sexual assault case involving french politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn at the height of his career.
