Elle s'en va (On My Way)

NOT AVAILABLE ANYMORE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX. NOW AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX DVD. You will never again find a movie quite like Emmanuelle Bercot's On My Way (Elle s'en va, 2013)Only in France will a film follow a French sixty-year-old woman embarking on a road trip in various rural towns for a pack of cigarettes.

Have you ever thought of leaving everything behind at a moment's notice, and living (what you think) might be a simpler life? For the first time in her life, Betty (Catherine Deneuve) considers this question, and acts on it. She doesn’t return home to her elderly mother and the financial problems facing her family's restaurant. Instead, she simply drives away, with no destination.

Soon enough, a nicotine addiction takes over and Betty – left without much money – makes peculiar encounters, guided by her desires of cigarettes. But with a business and a mother to take care of, how long can she go on this way?

Most of the characters our main character crosses paths with are played by amateur actors, which only add to the sincerity and down to earth approach of the film. Catherine Deneuve, more natural than she ever been on screen, shines through every scene, proving to be the main appeal of this delicate and heartfelt road-movie.
