What to Watch on TV5MONDE Cinema on Demand in September

For September, TV5MONDE Cinema On Demand honors the award-winning director, Claude Sautet. Known for his films presenting intimate portraits of the French bourgeoisie, Sautet's celebrated career spanned over four decades. This month's lineup includes some of his most critically acclaimed films.

Un cœur en hiver (1992)

Available beginning September 11. In French with English subtitles.

Though love has always been Claude Sautet's favorite subject, he rediscovers and refreshes his perspective on it in this love triangle drama reminiscent of François Truffaut.

Beautiful violin virtuoso Camille has two obsessions: the music of Ravel, and a friend of her husband's who crafts violins. But his heart seems to be as cold as her playing is passionate.

Nelly et Mr. Arnaud (1995)

Available beginning September 18. In French.

It's easy to enjoy this two time César award winning flick, which proves to mix dark humor and sorrowful truths of life remarkably well.

Nelly is behind on her rent and saddled with an unemployed and uninterested husband. When she meets Monsieur Arnaud, an older and wealthier man, Nelly sees a chance to escape from poverty and loneliness. Arnaud enlists her help with transcribing his memoirs and, as their unconventional relationship blossoms, barely-contained emotions threaten to break free.

"Writer-director Sautet's great achievement is to introduce a world of undefinable impulses; the two actors' great achievement is to step into that world and experience them." - Washington Post

Director : Claude Sautet
Cast: Emmanuelle Béart, Michel Serrault, Jean-Hugues Anglade
Genre: Drama

Available beginning September 4. In French with English subtitles.

As usual, Claude Sautet takes his time to dissect human relationships and succeeds in an intimate drama with an impressive cast.

This is a quiet drama about the struggles of a former drug addict and dealer, Bruno Calgagni (Patrick Dewaere), as he is released from prison in the U.S. and arrives back home in France. His unhappy father blames this disgraceful prison stint for the death of Bruno's mother. No one wants to hire an ex-con, and a romantic liaison with another, very delicately balanced former addict only adds to the burden Bruno is carrying. Mauvais Fils skillfully limns Bruno's daily fight to keep his head above water.
