Filmed in NYC by the great Marcel Carné (PORT OF SHADOWS, CHILDREN OF PARADISE), this film is adapted from one of the novels Simenon wrote during the decade he spent living in the US and Canada (1945-55). Portraying the nocturnal wanderings of two lonely souls who meet in an all-night diner, its narrative closely reflects Simenon’s own first meeting with his second wife. A dark and moody story of a brief love affair played out against the backdrop of the sleepless city, Carne’s film version makes brilliant use of its mid-60s Manhattan locations.
