Acting mostly with a stony face and a blinking left eye, Mathieu Amalric plays Jean-Dominique Bauby in the incredible true story of a man afflicted with “locked-in syndrome” after a near-fatal car crash.
Before the accident, Bauby was the successful, influential editor of French Elle. Now, unable to move or speak after a stroke, he learns to communicate, and eventually dictates the memoir on which the film is based, using a painstaking blinking code he invents with a nurse and a speech therapist. The women in his life rally around his bedside in this beautiful film by director Julian Schnabel.
