A grim fairytale, indeed, Hop-O'-My-Thumb follows five brothers are abandoned in the woods by their parents and wind up at a large house occupied by a terrifying ogre (Denis Levant, Holy Motors). They discover the house after wandering deep into the woods, and the woman who owns it warns them: better to get lost in the woods than enter this place, because the ogre will happily devour them. Director Marina de Van knew that she wanted to dig deeply into the terror in this dark, classic fairytale, and her approach is bursting with epic poetry and violence.
