Astragal (L’Astragale) by Brigitte Sy (2015, 97 min.). Based on a true story, brilliant and rebellious 19-year-old Albertine (Leïla Bekhti) escapes from prison where she is serving a sentence for a holdup. She jumps from the wall, and a bone from her ankle breaks: the astragal. Rescued by fugitive Julien (Reda Kateb), she goes with him to Paris and falls in love. While he leads his gangster life, Albertine struggles for her freedom and against the pain of Julien’s absence. Out of desperation, she creates beautiful poetry. Filmed in luscious black and white, Sy lovingly recreates the real-life passion between Julien and Albertine.
