Trois Mondes (Three Worlds)

The moral dilemma is no simple game, according to Catherine Corsini, the director of Three Worlds (Trois Mondes,2012). It divides all of us and blurs the line between right and wrong. One drunken wild night, Al (Raphaël Personnaz) becomes responsible for a hit-and-run, just days before saying “I do” to the beautiful and unassuming Marion (Adele Haenel). Al is about to inherit his father in-law’s lucrative car dealership, but not without harboring a harrowing secret of the man lying in a hospital, fighting for breath. Filled with guilt, his life takes another dark turn once a witness identifies him but simply can’t bring herself to turn him in.

Al doesn’t consider himself the villain, but in his attempt to hide secrets, he is swallowed deeper and deeper into an uncontrollable ocean of lies.

The “butterfly effect” is nothing new, but Three Worlds deserves credit for a fresh approach to the idea. The actions of all characters are human, filled with compassion and all the twists and turns remain infuriatingly plausible. Three Worlds succeeds both as a drama and as a chilly and suspenseful thriller.

"Each thread of the plot is followed to its dangling, ragged conclusion in a movie that may be painful to watch but that maintains a chilly integrity." - New York Times

"Tout, des textes à la mise en scène, refuse la facilité. Le film, lui non plus, n'est pas facile. Mais ses ambiguïtés comme ses difficultés lui sont une vraie richesse." - Le Monde
