Lucy becomes the most successful French film abroad

Luc Besson's film confirms its world phenomenon status by breaking the record held until now by... another Besson production, Taken 2.

Lucy has crossed the 50-million-admissions' threshold and thus becomes the most successful French film recorded in international theaters. The film by Luc Besson broke the record established only two years ago by Taken 2, another EuropaCorp production, which attracted 47.8 million spectators in more than 80 territories.

In release since July 2013 in 60 territories, Lucy has passed the million-admissions' mark in a dozen of them, in particular in the USA and English-speaking Canada (15.7 million), Mexico (3.5 million), Russia(3.4 million), and South Korea (2 million), where it is distributed by Universal Pictures.

More recently, the film starring Scarlett Johansson has risen to the top of the Chinese box office (Fundamental), with more than 6 million admissions after 10 days on 6 000 screens. This exceptional result means that to date, Lucy has a total of more than 52 million theater admissions in sixty territories, tallying almost €300 million in B.O. revenues.

This is the absolute record registered by UniFrance films, not only in foreign theaters, but also on a worldwide scale: by adding the 5.2 million admissions to date in French theaters, Lucy has outstripped the exceptional performance of the French language film The Intouchables, which appealed to nearly 52 million spectators worldwide (19.5 million in France and 32 million in foreign theaters).

This is an excellent performance for EuropaCorp and Luc Besson, whose latest film joins the ranks of his earlier The Fifth Element among the top 3 best performances by French films abroad recorded by UniFrance films.
