“New French Shorts 2019,” a five-film sampler of new Gallic cinema presented by IFC Center and UniFrance, screens Tuesday, April 9 at 7:00pm at IFC Center. Celebrating its sixth edition, the showcase boasts a selection of animation, comedy and drama, including films from Cannes, Toronto and Locarno, plus the winner of the César Award for Best Animated Short.

The evening features a Q&A with director Camille Lugan, whose LA PERSISTENTE premiered at Cannes in the Critics Week section. The complete program runs 86 minutes and includes:

KAPITALISTIS (dir. Pablo Munoz Gomez, 14 min.) Official selection: Locarno International Film Festival; Best Short Film Nominee, César Awards. 5 year-old Nikos knows the truth: “Santa is capitalist. He brings toys to the rich kids and sweat shirts to the poor ones.”

THE VILLA (Les grâcieuses, dir. Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud, 18 min.) A real estate agent on the verge of a breakdown runs into difficulties showing a drop-dead gorgeous villa. WICKED GIRL (Kötü Kiz, dir. Ayce Kartal, 8 min.) César Award for Best Animated Short Film; Official selection: Toronto International Film Festival. Inspired by a true story, this stunning prizewinner depicts the free flow of emotions, ideas and images as its eight-year-old narrator recalls her days in her grandparents’ village in Turkey.

PAULINE ENSLAVED (Pauline asservie, dir. Charline Bourgeios-Tacquet, 24 min.) Official selection: Cannes Critics Week. Anais Demoustier tries to spend a relaxing weekend in the country with friends, but keeps waiting for her married lover to respond to her last text.

LA PERSISTENTE (dir. Camille Lugan, 22 min.) Official selection: Cannes Critics Week. A ski resort, somewhere in the French Pyrenees. Ivan only lives for his motorcycle—the sentient, loving, breathing La Persistente. When a local rival tears her away from him, Ivan becomes obsessed with winning her back. Filmmaker Camille Lugan in person for Q&A.

Presented in collaboration with UniFrance, the showcase coincides with the fifth edition of the traveling program “Young French Cinema,” distributed by UniFrance and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy to theaters and cultural institutions throughout the US.
