French Female Filmmakers!

While Hollywood struggles with a vast gender divide, French cinema has a thriving  culture of female auteurs. And we are marking woman’s history month with three of our all time favourite French films directed by women, covering intergenerational chaos in Morocco, to New York hipsters, to French acting royalty, acting royal…

Rock the Casbah (2013)

Written and directed by Laïla Marrakchi (Marock) Rock the Casbah introduces to a once tight knit family now scattered across international borders, as they gather for the funeral of the family patriarch (the legendary Omar Sharif). Sparks start to fly when the youngest daughter, now an actress in America, arrives. Her return provides the opportunity to settle some scores with her sisters, as the order once maintained by their father breaks down. Between laughter and tears, a collective hysteria leads each of the women to face up to some home truths.

Palais Royal ! (2005)

Written, directed by, and starring modern day comedy legend Valérie Lemercier joined by arguably the reigning queen of French cinema Catherine Deneuve, Palais Roayale is a joyfully silly comedy, about a ordinary woman (Lemercier) is thrust into the limelight when she ‘accidentally’ becomes a queen… faced with an icy queen regent (Deneuve), she must learn how to behave like the monarch she now is. Full of wincingly awkward humour, but anchored by a warm heart, this is a wonderful comedy for the whole family to enjoy.
