L'affaire SK1 (Serial Killer 1)

Oops, just missed it! This film is no longer available on Netflix streaming or DVD. Frédéric Tellier’s gripping thriller proves that car chases and gunfights are not a necessity in creating tension and keeping the spectators on the edge of their seats, especially when a movie, is based on true events.

This police procedural recreates the events of the decade-long search and trial of "The Beast of the Bastille,"France's first serial killer, who was tracked down using the modern criminological technique of DNA analysis for the first time.

This story unfolds through the eyes of rookie detective Franck Magne (Raphaël Personnaz), who quickly becomes obsessed with the unsolved case as he enters the homicide squad. Frédéric Tellier’s doesn’t try to explain the evil but is rather interested about the detailed work, the frustration, and the lives destroyed by a seven-year investigation. The documentary-style approach of the reconstruction of these tragic events proves to be both heartbreaking and chilling.

Serial Killer 1 is a dense, sober, but none-the less intense crime thriller that borrows more from David Fincher’s Zodiac than from Lethal Weapon
