Intouchables

NOT AVAILABLE ANYMORE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX. NOW AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX DVD.In November of 2011, a film wasn’t simply “released." Nay. A “cultural event” of the year happened upon France. It was co-directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, and it is entitled, The Intouchables (Intouchables). In a little over two months, the film became the second highest grossing box office hit in France, second only to Welcome to the Sticks (Bienvenue chez les ch'tis). The project received countless accolades, winning more awards than losing. This includes its best actor Omar Sy beating out the stiff competition with Jean duJardin, nominated for The Artist at the Cesar Awards, France's own version of the Oscars.

... And I haven’t even gotten to the plot yet. Based on a true story, the story centers around middle-aged aristocrat Philippe (Francois Cluzet) who is unfortunately paralyzed from the neck down. He is stiff, depressed, and out of touch. When he sets up a formal appointment with his secretary to interview a long line of potential caretakers, fast talking, street- wise Driss (Omar Sy) marches into the office, ahead of his turn. He slams a form on the desk, demanding a signature proving he looked for a job for purposes of receiving a government unemployment check. Charmed by his frankness and animated character, Philippe challenges Driss to take care of him for 1 week. Months later, Driss is still employed by Philippe, building a friendship that will make you ball and jump for joy in equal measure.

Not only is this film an experience of mesmerizing talent and deep -rooted belly- laughs, (always appreciated) but it is a strong reminder that the most powerful thing one has to offer is friendship, pure and simple.
