Bande de filles (Girlhood)

Oops, just missed it! This film is no longer available on Netflix streaming or DVD. Being a girl is more complicated than anyone could have ever expected, as made clear by Céline Sciamma's charming, but bewildering Girlhood.

Sciamma, the director that brought you Water Lilies and Tomboy, is back and offers you the same youthful relatability that her two previous features did, coupled with bittersweet feelings of empathy.

Girlhood follows the story of Marieme (Karidja Touré) who, feeling hopeless and desperate about her abusive and neglectful family situation, finds solace in a rough gang of neighborhood girls. Things turn bizarre and tragic, when Marieme chooses the wrong way out of her bleak prospects, and agrees to do some illegal business.

The loss of innocence is never too cliché to capture with a camera lens, as it is everyone's story in one way or another, and Touré does a spectacular job of creating that raw sense of vulnerability of discovery, as well as coming out of one's shell.
The merry band of female outlaws, played by Assa Sylla, Lindsay Karamoh, and Marietou Toure shape the heart of the film, providing the heroine with the respect, support and belonging she desperately lacks at home. Together they paint a beautiful and truly inspiring picture of feminine strength and grit.

A surefire hit for all the girls out there and the boys who love them!
