Alceste à bicyclette (Bicycling with Molière)

NOT AVAILABLE ANYMORE TO STREAM ON NETFLIX. NOW AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX DVD. Philippe Le Guay's refined Bicycling with Moliere is oddly humorous and human. Even better, it features yet another bang up acting job done by Fabrice Luchini.

The life of retired and grumpy recluse Serge (Fabrice Luchini) is about to be loosened up by an old colleague and famous soap opera actor, Gauthier (Lambert Wilson), who makes the trek to the Ile de Ré to propose that Serge star with him in a new play he is planning to produce. Their opposite personalities create fireworks in front of our eyes, and the irony of the Moliere dialogue mirroring their real lives just adds to the magic.

Literature lovers and thespians alike will especially find a special place for this film in their hearts, due to the warm and engaging rehearsal scenes lead by the two main characters, and the focus on one of the most influential Western writers of the 17th century, France's very own Shakespeare, Molière.

But at the end of the day, what really grabs you are the unforgettable and secluded settings of the Ile de Ré, a rocky island by the Atlantic Ocean. Dilapidated buildings, charming old houses, and isolated bike trails by the water can only be in a French film. This is why we visit FrenchFlicks every weekend!

Enjoy a weekend away with this gem of a comedy.
